A crown, also known as a cap, is a permanent cover over a damaged tooth. A crown returns a tooth to its natural shape, size and function, and improves its strength and appearance.

Reasons for a tooth’s needing a crown vary. The tooth may have a cavity that’s too big for a filling; it’s got a crack, is worn down or otherwise weak; it’s had root canal therapy and must be restored. Crowns can be put on a front tooth because it’s permanently stained or misshaped.
Here’s the process.
The tooth is prepared by drilling away the outer layer and, if necessary, removing any decay. If what remains of the tooth needs more bulk, the dentist will build up the core.
The dentist then takes an impression (via a mold or a digital scan) so the crown will look and fit perfectly. He or she will most likely make you an interim crown that will be put in place with temporary adhesive. The permanent crown will be made by an outside lab or the dentist himself.
With the perpetual crown in hand, the dentist puts it in place and adjusts it for fit. When the crown’s look and feel are perfect, it’s glued into place.
